Technology and Conservation

|
Traditional
shea processing involves heavy inputs of fuelwood
and female labor. In order to conserve the tree as
a local natural resource, the economic utility of
shea-nut and shea-butter must 'compete' with the short-term
cash value of the tree as a sack or two of charcoal. |
.
Improved
technology introduced under the Shea Project reduces
both female labor and fuelwood inputs, reinforcing the
productive utility of the species and reducing
environmental impacts of processing. |
